What is it that makes Rohit Sharma such a special talent? Why is it that the knowledgeable talk so highly of this Mumbaikar, donning the Deccan Chargers colours in the DLF Indian Premier League? Two stunning innings inside 24 hours offer us a fascinating insight into his batsmanship – and I am talking of his knocks against Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab.His match-winning effort against Kolkata Knight Riders has been the knock of the tournament. When Mashrafe Mortaza got to bowl the last over, Rohit Sharma had the psychological advantage. Mashrafe was playing the first game of the tournament and was bowling the final over. And Mashrafe made the mistake of bowling a little too quick. The pace made a lot of difference – and that became apparent when Irfan Pathan bowled to Rohit in a similar situation the next day. Rohit used the pace very well. The six off a full toss was an outstanding shot because he hit it into the stands. The way he hits the ball is wonderful and very difficult at the same time. Striking a six off a full toss from a fast bowler is not easy. Even the last ball he hit was a good ball. I think it was a good idea to bowl a bouncer. Everyone was expecting Mashrafe to bowl either a yorker or a slower one and that too maybe slightly outside the off-stump. The bouncer was the last idea on even the batsman’s mind. Generally batsmen would not expect a bouncer off the last ball of the match. Also Mashrafe never bowled a bouncer throughout the innings. It was an accurate bouncer but Rohit had played five balls already and was not struggling and had the confidence. He just went with the flow and used the speed of the bowler.When he faced Irfan the next day, Rohit could not repeat what he did against Mashrafe. He was tired and not very fresh. He swung the bat against the slower one which was a brilliant ball. To hit the ball he put in all the effort. He had already scored 40 odd runs and was exhausted. The other part is Irfan in an experienced guy and both know one other well. Irfan varied his pace very well. Ultimately it was going to be 50-50. Against Mashrafe, the ball was in the slot to be hit and the pace proved handy. Rohit adjusted very well against Mashrafe, swinging his arms. The dangerous thing with Kolkata Knight Riders was that they had nothing to lose. And the way the likes of Brendon McCullum and Brad Hodge play. When you get a big score on the board, it almost forces a team to throw caution to the wind. And that I think was the danger. We weren't accurate as we could be with the cricket ball. Thats the first thing we put our hand up and say that. Right through we were placed under pressure. We couldn't execute as what we have been doing in the past couple of rounds. Delhi Daredevils were treated to a dose of their own medicine by Royal Challengers Bangalore, who took a confident step toward semifinal qualification, at the Wanderers here.The seven-wicket win catapulted Royal Challengers Bangalore to the fourth spot in the league table behind Delhi (18 points), Chennai Super Kings (15) and Deccan Chargers (14). Pietersen wants IPL chance

Kevin Pietersen has given the strongest indication yet that England's players are feeling they are getting a rough deal by not being able to take part in the Indian Premier League. While Pietersen remains focussed on his England career he hinted his priorities may change.
While millions of dollars have been splashed on the world's leading players England's stars have had to watch from afar as their international commitments and central contracts preclude any involvement. On the whole they have taken the party line that England comes first, but frustration is now growing.
"It's not something we can control, but it's definitely something that the hierarchy needs to fix into our fixtures," Pietersen told The Times. "You want your best players playing both for their country and for the IPL. You don't want them choosing between the two. It's silly to think that you're losing up to a million [dollars] over six weeks." "As long as it doesn't interfere with me playing for England, then I'm all for the IPL," he said. "I won't jeopardise my England career for the IPL just yet, but the schedules have to be sorted because the England players are the only ones missing out."

Dimitri Mascarenhas is England's only representative in the first IPL tournament, having struck a deal with Hampshire to allow him two weeks in India with the Jaipur franchise. Although Mascarenhas has been part of the ODI squad over the last year he doesn't hold a central contract, so it wasn't a decision the ECB were involved with.
